Ankylosing spondylitis in the wrists, forearms, and spinal column
Note the fused wrist bones in the arms, and the abnormal protuberances, fusions, and cavities in the spine.
Ankylosing spondylitis (also known as Bechterew’s disease) is an inflammatory spondyloarthropathy (arthritis affecting the spinal column), and its name comes from the Greek “ankylos-”, meaning “crooked”. Spondylitis can be broken down into “spondyl-” and “-itis”, which mean “spine” and “inflammation”, respectively.
Simply put, it’s a fusion of the joints in the axial skeleton (the spinal column, ribcage, and cervical collar), but there’s little else that’s simple about this condition. While it’s known to have a strong genetic predisposition and heritability, the exact triggers that begin the process of syndesmophytosis (literally "the process of abnormal binding together") which fuse bones together is not known.
While many of the genetic and immune factors in AS similar to those in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylopathy has been differentiated from other RA conditions as early as the second century CE, by Galen. Because of its effect on the spinal column, AS has long been known as "bamboo spine".
Unfortunately, despite many treatments and therapies being available to counteract the effects of this autoimmune condition on the bones and organs, there is no cure.

I’m never throwing a cigarette butt on the ground again. Holy shit.
YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN THROWING YOUR CIGARETTES ON THE GROUND ANYWAYS
omfg poor baby
I’m so glad this post exists. I took ecology in high school and apparently a lot of animals are attracted to the smell of cigarettes and they eat them whenever they can find them. Sometimes they’ll even wander onto roads at night if they smell one and they’ll get hit by cars doing so. And they can’t digest them. The cigarettes just sit in their stomachs until they run out of space and then they starve because they always feel full. I don’t understand why people can’t just put their cigarettes out and then toss them in the trash bin or keep them in an ashtray in their cars until they get home. Is it really that hard?
This makes me so sad.
HOLY SHIT THIS IS IMPORTANT
The Vampire Bat is the only species of bat that has retained its ability to maneuver on land, not only can they walk on land but they can also hop and run at surprisingly fast speeds!
desmodus rotundus is objectively adorable
they’re also the only mammal to run with front propulsion! how cool is that. every four-footed mammal that can gallop does so in the same pattern, except these little guys.
Reference for dragon walking.
I want to see this in a horror game
Those trees are really prett— oh.
Wtf did i just see…

A new formula helps CSIs determine whether a victim took a blow standing up.
1// Height of the blood at the beginning of its parabolic arc, that is, when it left the body.
2// Tangent of the angle at which the first blood drop hit the ground.
3// Tangent of the angle at which the second drop hit the ground.
4// Horizontal distance the first drop traveled.
5// Horizontal distance the second drop traveled.

Two-Faced Chick and Two-Headed Calf
Two-faced (diprospus) and two-headed (dicephalic) animals may look similar, but they’re different on the most fundamental of levels. Two-headed animals are simply conjoined twins that stopped separating very early in the process. They generally have two fully-formed cephalic regions, though sometimes one head is much less responsive than the other.
Two-faced animals, on the other hand, have a mutation in the Sonic Hedgehog (yes, it looks like a hedgehog and was named after Sonic) homologue gene. This gene regulates the symmetry and width of the head and facial features, and when the gene is mutated in a way that causes too much of the correlating proteins to be produced, diprospus animals are formed. As this gene is also responsible for brain and upper neural tube development, it’s uncommon for diprospus creatures or humans to live very long after birth.
